Water Well

Dry well: causes, solutions and how to recover a well without water

A dry well does not always mean that the well is permanently lost. A water well may stop producing water due to natural causes, technical issues or excessive use of the resource. The key is to identify the cause in order to apply the right solution.

Main causes of a dry well

Drought and a drop in the water table

During periods of low rainfall, the groundwater level can drop. If the well is not deep enough, it may reduce its flow rate or temporarily stop producing water.

Overexploitation of the aquifer

When more water is extracted than the aquifer can naturally recharge, the water table decreases. This can happen due to intensive use of the well or the presence of other nearby water catchments.

Sediments or blockages

Over time, a well can accumulate sand, mud or sediments that make it difficult for water to enter. In these cases, the well may appear to be dry even though there is still water in the ground.

Pump failures

Sometimes the problem is not the well itself, but the pump or the installation. A breakdown, an incorrectly positioned pump or an electrical fault can prevent the water from being extracted properly.

Poor well location

If the well was drilled without a proper preliminary study, it may be located in an area with limited groundwater resources or poor water catchment capacity.

How to know what is happening to a dry well

To determine whether the problem is hydrological or mechanical, a technical inspection is necessary. This makes it possible to check the water level, the condition of the pump, the depth of the well and the possible presence of blockages.

Solutions to recover a dry well

Depending on the cause of the problem, the most common solutions are:

  • Well cleaning or sand removal.
  • Pump repair or replacement.
  • Inspection of the installation.
  • Well deepening.
  • New drilling in a more suitable area.

Can a dry well be recovered?

In many cases, yes. A dry well is not always definitive. If the problem is related to the pump, sediments or a partial drop in the water table, it may be possible to recover it with the right intervention.

The best option is to carry out a professional diagnosis before making a decision.
